The purpose of this blog:
This blog will serve to document my thoughts and experiences in a way which might be useful in an educational setting. These entries will contain my personal thoughts on the world, current events, history, philosophical / ideological dilemmas, and many aspects of culture. It will also include many of my experiences and other things that I find interesting. I encourage all readers to consider my thoughts with an open mind and discuss the issues that I raise through comments or e-mail. It is not my intention to instruct people how to think--rather, it is my hope that this blog will help others to increase their ability to think critically and engage the world around them.
A bit about who I am:
Future teacher and global citizen:
My name is Nicole Davidson. I am a student at Saginaw Valley State University who is studying Secondary Education, Spanish, and Political Science. All three of these subjects reflect my passions and who I am. I care deeply for young people and delight in the idea of working with them so that they might learn and broaden their perception of the world. In order to do this, I am interested in guiding learners to a greater appreciation of the world, as well as their role in it, through the study of language and politics. I fervently believe that both of these subjects help lead to a greater understanding of our world. The study of language helps us to view the world as others view it and embody the struggles that are important to our fellow man in a new way while gaining a deeper understanding of ourselves as well. The study of politics can help to broaden the mind and allow students to reflect on various aspects of our society. It assists the development of an identity, helps with critical thinking, and is a path to being an engaged citizen who actively participates in our community. For these reasons, what I am aspiring to do is important to me.
Who I've been:
Short girl from the Tri-cities, Michigan:
I spent the first several years of my life in a small, leaky cabin in Sanford, MI. In third grade I transferred to a k-12 public charter school in Midland County, which impacted my development and perception of the world. My alma mater had a strong character education program, a rigorous academics program, and focused on community and civics. Despite my aversion of its political affiliations, I can say without a doubt that my school shaped me.
I was also shaped by moving into Midland. I'm not sure what you know about Midland, but it is a great community, especially for young people. It's very safe, even if it seems a tad stifling. It's where I grew up.
Since then I have also lived in Bay City and Saginaw, but, as of yet, I do not identify with either community. I am currently in a situation where I view school, family, and friends as home--not a location.
Where I'm going:
The World!
I'm headed in the direction of teaching after graduation, obviously. I really think that, for my first few years of teaching, I would like to teach in a low-income school district--although I am sure that I could have a meaningful experience anywhere. I also know that I would like to continue my education through pursuing a History endorsement and a Social Studies endorsement over my first few summers out of school. Then on to my Masters in Education, maybe a ESL endorsement, and whatever education I can get. Hopefully a husband and children will happen sometime as well. :) I know that eventually I would like to consider a career change to something involving educational policy--but these are just my aspirations for now.
Aside from my more long-term goals, I am also looking forward to going to Salamanca, Spain this summer. I will be studying there to finish up the last few credits of my Spanish major. I will also be enjoying myself immensely, having my first true taste of independence from my parents, and obtaining resources that will be invaluable in the years to come! I will also be seeing an ocean for the first time in my life!
Anyways, thank you for reading and please stay tuned for some thoughts on education, government, and my trip to Spain!
